Renovating your Bathroom - Part Three

So, now you've done your pre-renovation list, the bathroom is designed, fittings have arrived and any tradies required are confirmed.

IT'S NOW TIME TO BREAK OUT THE DEMO GEAR !!!!!!

Here's how to renovate your bathroom in 15 Easy Steps ...

1. DESIGN
Your project will run much more smoothly if you have some detailed drawings of your design. It is a definite visual aid so everything is installed in the right place. It avoids the “you didn’t tell me that” discussion. Trust us, it happens!!

2. SCOPE OF WORKS
Have a detailed scope of works that will enable you and your tradesmen to work to schedule and budget.  This could be as simple as laid out on a Word or Excel document.

3. DEMOLITION
Remove unwanted fittings & walls where necessary. Don’t forget to have a skip bin ready which you’ll need to retain for the tiling off cuts, other building waste and any packaging you can’t recycle.

4. RE-BUILD
Re-frame where needed, add nogs and studs for wall hung items, framing for recessed shower niches, mirrors etc.
Pre-plumb & pre-wire to fit the new design.
Re-line walls *we recommend to use villa board on all bathroom walls that will be having tiles, not just GIB Aqualine board (or similar).

5. PLASTER
Plaster walls and ceilings if affected, even if tiling the walls, it will give a better finish to the tiling.

6. PAINT
Any un-tiled surface, ie ceilings, doors, window trims. We recommend a product similar to Resene Spacecote in the colour and sheen level you desire.

7. HEATING
Install under floor heating - to floor areas under tiles. It is a really good way to keep your whole bathroom dry and warm and so nice not to have cold feet. Put them on a timer for cost savings.

8. WATERPROOFING
Waterproof floor (if not timber floor boards) and all wet areas.

9. TILING
Install tiles to desired areas. Do full wall areas, half walls can look nasty unless in a traditional home. Mitre exterior edges as it looks so much better. Use epoxy based grout in the shower, it helps prevent mould.

10. SHOWER GLASS
Measure shower glass and install channels (If not using a pre-made unit, don’t buy cheap imports, they won’t last).

11. FIT-OFF
Plumbing & Electrical Fit–Off. Builder to do final Fit-off.

12. SHOWER GLASS
Install shower Glass.

13. CLEAN all dust and grout haze.

14. ADD plush towels, smelly candles and yummy soaps. Don’t underestimate the inclusion of plants in your new bathroom. They will add life and energy, just make sure the can handle the steam!

15. ENJOY your new bathroom and the fact that you did it yourself !
